March is doing March things, as we get snow after the  peepers sing their first sonata.  We are actually glad that it didn't warm up for too long.  The last time it got too warm in March, we had a year without apples as the blossoms came and got frosted.

We are enjoying the planning process for our flower plantings, fruits and annuals.  We are looking at having an area of you-pick for our CSA members.  What would you like to pick yourself?  We will not have fruits yet as those will take us a couple years to get going.

We start our new laying hen chicks this coming week.  We were unable to get organic pullets this year from our usual sources so we will need to grow them ourselves.  This will mean that we will be short of eggs until August, when the new pullets start laying.  It takes about 24 weeks of growth until chicks start laying eggs.

Our germination chamber is set up and full.  We may set up another, as our space gets limited this time of year.  We start the main season crops this coming week with tomatoes, peppers and all the rest getting going.

We mulched the rhubarb with silage this week.  The silage helps with nutrition for the plants as it breaks down and also provides weed control in the bed.  We cover the young plants with buckets while we mulch to protect them.

This week we start to look at pastures and fencing repair.  We will have a consultant come look at what we are doing for pasture management this year as we work with the Natural Resource Conservation Service on a plan for fencing and pasture waterers.

The equinox sunset was especially picturesque this year.  Our end of the earth is now working toward the sun as we race to the solstice.  All of creation seeks to be fruitful this time of year.  The peepers peep, the seeds sprout, the buds blossom and the fish spawn.  Be fruitful in a way that seems right for you!
