The Best Food From People Who Care

Newsletter 05/24/2024

Season 2024 is starting to get going as we get our first really warm weather.  Sunny days are spent tilling, transplanting, mowing, covering and even the weeding is starting.  Our rainy and wet days are spent planting in the greenhouse, picking for markets and getting ready for the season.

We have finished our barn roof!  Now the cleanup can begin.  There is pieces of roofing, insulation, screws and general debris everywhere.

The preparation for our harvest season is also underway.  We had our first every Food Safety inspection with a NYS Food Safety Inspector.  We have been working toward this for a year as we knew that we would fall under the inspection criterion for this year. The inspector was really helpful as he did the inspection, showing us what he expected, the paperwork we needed to keep and helping us understand what we needed to do.

We are building out a new packing materials storage and updating our cooler set up with new pallet flooring and monitoring protocols.

This effort is taking a lot of time and hard work right now, but will improve our efficiency, tracking ability and food safety into the future.  Never a dull moment.

On the animal side of things we are headlong into summer production and are busy on the pastures.

We have 600 new chicks that are already 2-3 weeks old and ready to move to their pasture set up.  We are prepping their areas and will have them outside next week.

We also have a new lamb on the farm.  She is just a week old, but is doing great with her mum.  It is really fun to see  a baby on pasture.

The cows are grazing spring grass and moving to a new pasture every 2-3 days.  We will be harvesting our winter haylage starting next week and that will be fermented and stored in our bunk silo for use starting in November.

CSA Home Deliveries will be starting in 3 weeks.  By then we should have some greens and strawberries to get into the shares!

Lots of things are growing around here!  Hannah and Mike's baby Russell is already a happy farm kid.

We will be putting out a welcome to CSA email next week, once we have the list finalized for the Home Delivery CSA.  Thanks for your patience with that process.  We decided to leave enrollment open for an additional week.

This week at market we will be offering a patty special for Memorial Day to get going on the grills.  Get 20% off of our chuck patties, sirloin patties or sausage patties.
